Field notes

Why I put the cofounder in WhatsApp.

I built three dashboards for Otto before I deleted them. Here's what changed when approvals moved to the place I was already reading messages on the toilet.

The first version of Otto had a cockpit. Real-time mission view, cost ledger, plan tree, the works. I spent about three weeks on it. I was very proud of it.

Then I noticed something embarrassing. I was opening it maybe twice a day. The agents would finish a research run at 2am and I'd see the result at 9am when I sat down at my desk. By then half the value had decayed (I'd already started writing the thing the research was supposed to inform).

The fix was obvious in hindsight. Put the notifications where I actually look, which for me is WhatsApp, several hundred times a day. So I wired the supervisor to ping me there instead. First message landed on a Tuesday at 11pm. I was watching a film. I replied 'yes ship it' and Otto shipped it.

The cockpit still exists. I use it maybe twice a week now, mostly to look at cost. The rhythm of working with Otto happens in WhatsApp, and that turns out to be the whole point.

I shipped a beautiful cockpit and then realised I was opening it twice a day, on a good day.
